US-India trade dispute escalates: India plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on US goods

According to India's Economic Times on May 13, the Indian government proposed to the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Monday that it plans to impose retaliatory tariffs on some American goods in response to the additional tariffs imposed by the United States on "safeguards". The Indian government stressed that this countermeasure aims to balance the economic losses caused by the US measures through a "substantial equivalent" trade adjustment.

Documents submitted by New Delhi to the WTO show that the U.S. tariff policy has affected India's exports to the U.S. worth about $7.6 billion, and the resulting tariff revenue is expected to reach $1.91 billion. As a response plan, India plans to raise the import tax rate for specific U.S. goods by suspending some preferential treatment for tariffs on the United States.

India specifically pointed out that there were procedural shortcomings in the implementation of safeguards in the United States and failed to provide necessary notifications to the WTO safeguards Committee in accordance with the rules. As the affected major trading partner and important exporter, India formally requested bilateral consultations with the United States.

Previously, the United States implemented safeguards on some steel and aluminum products from March 8, 2018, and imposed adjudication tariffs of 25% and 10% on these products on March 23, 2018. On February 10, 2025, the US side revised its relevant policies again, and the new measures will take effect from March 12. (International Financial News)
