Not long ago, the team of Quzhou Science and Technology College of China Agricultural University was awarded the 2025 China Youth May Fourth Medal Collective. As a young team with a proportion of up to 90% of young people under the age of 35, the Science and Technology Academy is inseparable from the effective talent training concept.
"As a teacher, I have been cultivating people all my life, I think the best way to cultivate talents is to throw him into the real scene and let him learn about 'war' in the 'war'." Recently, Zhang Fusuo, the initiator of the Science and Technology Academy, professor of China Agricultural University, and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said this when he shared his experience in talent training in the 16 years since the founding of the Science and Technology Academy.
Speaking of the cultivation of innovative talents, Zhang Fusuo said bluntly: "The challenge we are facing now is that the teacher 'indulges knowledge' to students in school, hoping that the students can listen, but the students are not interested. We are not letting them learn knowledge and exercise their abilities in practice, but letting them grow in a training environment like the campus that is separate from practice."
He believes: "We need to change the education scenario now, let students understand the real reality, understand the real needs, understand where technology is "bottleneck" and how to contribute to this technology need."
When the Science and Technology Court started, Zhang Fusuo imagined that their main task was to truly use innovative advanced technologies in farmers' fields and achieve increased production and income. But after going deep into the fields, he found that the students' changes significantly. In just one or two months, the students became light in their eyes and goals in their hearts. Naturally, "there is strength under their feet, and there is a way under their feet."
Zhang Fusuo saw the changes in the students and found that the enthusiasm for "seeking hardships" has become the norm in the science and technology courtyard. The reason why students in the Science and Technology College can grow rapidly is due to the "doubling effect" brought by "actual combat".
Since the establishment of the first science and technology courtyard in Baizhai Village, Quzhou County, Hebei Province in 2009, students of the Science and Technology Court of China Agricultural University have been stationed here all year round, solving practical problems in agricultural production practice with "zero distance, zero time difference, zero threshold, and zero cost" and growing in "practical combat".
After graduating from Quzhou Science and Technology College in 2021, Ye Songlin, a graduate student at China Agricultural University, did not leave Quzhou, but instead joined hands with the current students from three science and technology colleges to transfer the operating rights of 1,000 acres of land to establish a company.
In April 2023, in order to increase wheat and corn production and reduce emissions and increase farmers' income, the "Green Ton and Half Grain" science and technology battle was launched in Quzhou. The goal is to increase the annual grain output of one acre of land and reduce emissions by more than 30%. Ye Songlin's company joined the "fight".
He and his classmates overcome difficulties and skillfully used the integrated drip irrigation water and fertilizer system, the "four dense and one sparse" strip planting technology, and plant protection drone variable fertilization. In November 2024, the annual yield of "green ton and half grain" was exceeded - the annual yield of 1.52 tons of wheat and corn in a thousand mu, an increase of 42% by 46%, emission reduction and water savings of 30% compared with the county's average yield.
In this process, this group of young people also deeply felt the pride of using scientific knowledge to drive front-line production and strengthened their belief in being a "new farmer". Ye Songlin has a grand goal: "In the future, I want to promote the 'green ton of half grain' experience to more regions and build the entire agricultural industry chain."
Zhang Fusuo believes that real production practice scenarios can provide a natural training ground for the multiplication effect of the integrated development of education, science and technology and talents.
He said that in the process of discovering problems, solving problems, and helping farmers achieve increased production and income, students have experienced a cycle of comprehensive growth. In addition, students also need to engage in scientific and technological innovation, do experiments, write papers, and go through another academic cycle. In addition, villagers, cadres, journalists, etc. have taken turns asking various questions and seeking various answers. The students are actually experiencing training and growing every moment.
"How many circles have I cycled through my talent training? This is the doubling effect." Zhang Fusuo believes that without the real scenes of rural and agricultural industries, it may be difficult for students to achieve a doubling effect.
In his opinion, students are not only capable, but also passionate and motivated to cultivate talents in real scenes. (Intern Liu Xuan China Youth Daily·China Youth Network reporter Zhang Qian)
