In Nanuo Village, Xincun Village, Xinhe Town, Chongzuo City, Guangxi, two people stood in front of two sugarcane plants, one was “slim” and one was “fat” in the sugarcane fields, one was sad and one was happy.

After looking for it for a long time, the villager Ma Libiao finally gave in: "Your seedling is indeed stronger."

Meng Jinxing, the head of the Nuotun sugarcane "breeding, breeding and promotion" integrated demonstration base, laughed and said, "This is tissue culture!"

This "stadium competition" of sugarcane self-storage seedlings and tissue culture seedlings has resulted.

Seeing that years of experience are not as good as modern technology, Lao Ma couldn't help but ask: "Why?"

"Because of degeneration." Wang Lunwang, a researcher at the Sugar Cane Research Institute of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, explained, "Using the method of keeping your own seeds, sugarcane will reproduce asexually for a long time, and viral and bacterial diseases will accumulate. The longer the time, the deeper the disease."

A sugar cane can be used to squeeze sugar and plant it. Traditional self-retained sugarcane seeds. When farmers cut sugarcane, they leave the sugarcane in the field to continue growing according to their new planting conditions. When planting, they cut it into double buds or three buds and cut it into sections and buried it in the soil.

Wang Lunwang took his fingers and showed four "red cards" for his own seedlings - poor quality, slow breeding speed, more land for breeding, and large amount of seed stems.

"The sugarcane species after detoxification are purified and rejuvenated, and the factory reproduction is faster and the efficiency is higher." Wang Lunwang said.

In the Guangxi Sugarcane Detoxification Seedling R&D Center in Xinhe Town, administrator Chen Haoyu is carefully inspecting it before the automatic production line of the detoxification seedling culture medium. "We are the only one of Chongzuo!" The young man was filled with pride in his words.

In a culture room, there are 53 cultivation racks, and small jars are full of rows, with more than 50,000 bottles. In the jar, the tender green sugarcane seedlings quietly absorb nutrients. Through the culture flask, the growth status of each seedling can be clearly observed. The R&D center has just been in operation for half a year and has an annual seedling cultivation capacity of 50 million plants.

What are the advantages of detoxified seedlings? Wu Jianming, director of the Sugarcane Research Institute of Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, said: "Compared with self-storage seeds, fewer seeds are used. In the past, seven or eight thousand buds were planted per mu, but now it is about 5,000 buds; less land is used, saving half of it; faster, and the amount required for production can be cultivated in 6 to 8 months..."

New technologies are in full swing on the road to sugarcane breeding and seedling breeding. Wang Lunwang has been engaged in sugarcane breeding and seedling breeding for 38 years, and he has been particularly touched. The latest technical achievement is the "spiking buds and seedling cultivation" method. Traditionally, one acre of land requires 0.8 to 1 ton of sugarcane. These cane stems are buried in the ground with the buds and can no longer be used for sugar pressing. When you pick the buds from the stems, the saved cane stems can be squeezed into the factory for sugar.

Mengjinxing's sugarcane base is also equipped with a bud picker. Of course, the tissue culture seedlings are still more mature at present. He said: "Detoxification tissue culture is produced by the seedling factory in accordance with strict technical regulations to supply our first-level breeding base. After breeding, it will pass through the second-level and third-level breeding bases and then supply seedlings to farmers."

"In this just-passed pressing season, the planting area of sugar cane in Guangxi reached 11.7854 million mu, the total output of raw sugar cane reached 48.5774 million tons, and the production of sugar was 6.4608 million tons, an increase of 280,800 tons from the previous pressing season; the sugar production rate reached 13.3%, setting a record in Guangxi's history." Deng Guofu, Secretary of the Party Committee and President of the Guangxi Academy of Agricultural Sciences, told reporters.

"Grow a seedling well and taste the sweetness in the 'cane'." Meng Jinxing said, "Our base has a shortage of seedlings and has sold 1,100 mu, with an estimated net profit of over one million yuan."

Season after season, the "sugar jar" is firmly in hand.
