Google makes rare public statement on testimony from Apple executives, denying search volume in Safari decline

IT Home reported on May 8 that Google rarely made a public statement to refute the testimony in court that Apple's senior vice president Eddy Cue said that search traffic in Safari browser first declined in April 2025. Kuy's remarks were filed in the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust lawsuit against Google, and directly caused Google's stock price to fall by 7.51% on Wednesday.

Google published an article titled "Statement on Media Search Traffic Reports This Morning Media," on its official blog The Keyword, which clearly stated: "Our total search queries continue to grow, including the total number of queries from Apple devices and platforms.

Google further explained: "As we continue to enhance our search services with new features, users will find that Google search has become more practical for their more query needs, and they are exploring new things with new ways and avenues such as browsers, Google apps, voice assistants or Google Lens. We are excited about continuing to drive this innovation and look forward to sharing more progress at the upcoming Google I/O developer conference."

The core of the controversy lies in a deal between Google and Apple worth up to $20 billion (IT Home Note: the current exchange rate is approximately RMB 144.476 billion), which makes Google the default search engine on Apple devices. Eddie Kuy, in his testimony, attributed the so-called decline in search volumes to users' shift toward artificial intelligence services such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude.

Kuy also added that he believes that artificial intelligence services will eventually replace traditional search engines such as Google. Therefore, Apple needs to add these AI services as optional options in the Safari browser in the future. Kuy also revealed that Apple has discussed browser integration with Perplexity.
