IT Home reported on May 8 that Tesla announced the cancellation of its Cybertruck model's battery life expander sales plan and has notified customers who previously paid a deposit of $2,000 and will fully refund their deposit.
According to the email content shared by customers on social media and forums, Tesla did not specify the specific reason for canceling the sale of the accessory in the email. However, the notice was posted a month after the company quietly removed the accessory option from its official website configurator. The range extender was originally planned to be installed in the Cybertruck cargo box and is a remedy that Tesla introduced to solve the model's lower range than originally promised. When Cybertruck debuted, Tesla claimed that the model would be available in multiple versions, one of which can reach a range of 500 miles (IT Home Note: about 804.67 kilometers). However, the long-range version of the Cybertruck can only travel 350 miles (about 563.27 kilometers) on a single charge.
Electrek reported at the end of last year that the range extender was originally scheduled to start shipment in early 2025, but Tesla then delayed shipment until mid-2025 and reduced its promised range from 470 miles to 445 miles (about 716.16 kilometers).
Previously, Musk said he expected Tesla to sell 250,000 to 500,000 Cybertrucks each year. However, a recent recall shows that the model has sold less than 50,000 units in the past 15 months. It is not clear whether Tesla canceled the battery life expander plan because the sales of the model were much lower than expected, making the production of new accessories for the model uncost-effective, or other reasons.
